THE WORLD HERITAGE CITY OF FALUN

Falu Gruva and the mining landscape – a significant piece of Swedish history.

Falun received World Heritage status in 2001 and is thus, according to UNESCO, one of just over 1000 places in the world so important that it must be preserved forever. In the 17th century, Falun was an international city with Sweden's largest and most modern workplace - Falu Gruva. The technical, political, and social developments contributed to the formation of today's Swedish industrial society. There are many interesting and exciting places in the World Heritage city of Falun.

Falu Gruva

Falu Gruva is a place with a thousand years of history. Underground, you can see traces of hundreds of years of mining - large halls, winding passages, and deep shafts - and you are welcome to explore. Above ground, the mighty open pit Stora Stöten stretches out, surrounded by historic red-painted buildings. Today, the site has been transformed into a visitor attraction with a lunch restaurant, café, and shops.
